"Corals around the world are in jeopardy, and urgent action is needed to stem their decline. With the fashion industry and scientists uniting, we have an opportunity to reduce consumer pressure on corals, and raise awareness of the global threats they face from climate change, overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and disease."
— Dr. Andrew Baker, scientist and professor at the University of Miami
Corals and reefs throughout the world are under threat from climate change, pollution, overfishing and consumer demand. Red and pink corals are among the most valuable and widely traded of all coral species, yet they are the least protected. Extraction of red and pink corals for use in the jewelry industry is the greatest threat to this particular species of corals and one that can easily be removed. Harvesting impacts corals' ability to adapt to and recover from ocean acidification, pollution and climate change.
